Contents of CD ------------------------------ The CD contains one main directory, "contents." In the contents directory you will find the curricular material that makes up the CD organized by part and then by chapter. We recommend that you access the html pages on the CD by navigating from the "start.html" page in the root directory. ------------------------------ SECTION 2. General Information ------------------------------ Point your Web browser at "start.html" file in the root directory to access the Physlet exercises on this CD. To test for Java, point your Web browser at "start_with_test.html" file in the root directory on this CD. Physlets®-"Physics Applets"-are small, flexible Java applets that can be used in a wide variety of WWW applications. Physlets require a Java 1.4.2-enabled browser that supports JavaScript to applet communication. Unfortunately, not all browsers or all operating systems support BOTH this communication and the Java 1.4.2 or higher virtual machine. ------------------------- SECTION 3. System Requirements ------------------------- Requires a browser supporting the Java 1.4.2 or higher (1.5.0 or higher, preferred) Virtual Machine and JavaScript to Java communication. We recommend the following Windows configuration(s): 400 MHz processor Windows 2000/XP Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher with the Sun Java plugin 1.4.2 or higher; Mozilla 1.7 or higher with the Sun Java plugin 1.4.2 or higher. Firefox 1.0 or higher with the Sun Java plugin 1.4.2 or higher. We recommend the following Macintosh configuration(s): PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor Mac OS X.3/X.4 Macintosh Java plugin 1.4.2 or higher Safari 1.2 or higher Firefox 1.0.4 and Mozilla 1.7 can be found at http://www.mozilla.org. The Sun Microsystems Java plugins 1.4.2 and 1.5.0 can be found at http://java.sun.com. The latest information about Java and Safari and downloads on the Macintosh can be found at: http://www.apple.com. Adobe Acrobat Reader can be found at http://www.adobe.com. ------------------------- SECTION 4. Microsoft Windows and Java ------------------------- Recent versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla and Firefox support scripting using the Java 1.4.2 and 1.5.0 Java plugin from Sun Microsystems. The Microsoft Java VM will run most of the Physlets on this CD. All Physlets have been tested on Mozilla 1.7.8, Firefox 1.04, and Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. ------------------------- SECTION 5. Apple Macintosh and Java ------------------------- For the Macintosh platform, the Apple JVM (called MRJ, MacintoshRuntime Java) is available from Apple and is currently available in versions 1.4.2 and 1.5. Apple supports LiveConnect using the latest Safari browser under the OSX Panther (10.3) and OSX Tiger (10.4) operating systems. Although both Java 1.1 and JavaScript are implemented in older Macintosh operating systems, the ability of JavaScript to communicate with a Java applet is problematic on these older Apple computers. This problem is partially solved with Panther/Tiger and Safari. At the time of this printing, Mozilla and Firefox do not support LiveConnect on the Macintosh. We have found that while individual html pages on the CD run, browsing the contents of the CD within Safari on Macintosh OSX is problematic. A web page has properly loaded when the red message on the html page: "Please wait for the animation to completely load." vanishes. If the message vanishes the page is ready to run. If not, you must quit Safari and navigate through the CD contents to the exercise you want to complete using the file browser (Finder). Only then should you open the html page in Safari. Once you have completed the exercises on a particular html page, you must quit Safari to open a subsequent page. This process allows limited functionality of the CD contents on Macintosh OSX. All Physlets have been tested using the latest Safari browser and Java 1.4.2 and Java 1.5.0 plugin from Apple on OSX Panther (10.3) and OSX Tiger (10.4). ------------------------- SECTION 6. Copyright of Text and Copyright of Problems ------------------------- Physlet® Quantum Physics, i.e., the text and associated script for the Illustrations, Explorations, and Problems in Physlet® Quantum Physics are copyrighted by Prentice Hall for the English language and copyrighted by Mario Belloni, Wolfgang Christian, and Anne J. Cox for all other languages. Exercises using Open Source Physics (OSP) applets are copyright Mario Belloni, Wolfgang Christian, and Anne J. Cox in all languages and are clearly marked on the individual HTML pages. Physlets, that is the Java applets themselves but not the Physlet Quantum Physics scripts or narrative, are free for noncommercial use as described below. Instructors may not post the exercises from Physlet Quantum Physics on the Web without express written permission from the Publisher for English-language narrative and from Mario Belloni, Wolfgang Christian, and Anne J. Cox for all other languages. As stated on the Physlets website, Physlets (that is, the applets themselves) are free for noncommercial use. Instructors are encouraged to author and post their own Physlet-based exercises. In doing so, the text and script of Physlets-based exercises must be placed in the public domain for noncommercial use. Please share your work! Authors who have written Physlet exercises and posted them on the Internet are encouraged to send us short e-mail with a link to their exercises. Links will be posted on the Physlets page: http://webphysics.davidson.edu/applets/Applets.html. ------------------------- SECTION 7. Copyright of Applets and Conditions of Use for Applets ------------------------- Physlets, that is, the applets themselves, may be used to author new problems and these problems may be distributed along with the Physlet jar files for nonprofit, educational purposes without requesting permission under the following conditions: 1) That the text and script of Physlet problems, that is, problems that make use of Physlets to provide animation, visualization, or other types of educational content, be made available to others by placing them in the public domain. 2) That Davidson College should be credited as the source of the Physlet on at least one HTML page of the instructional unit where these applets are being used. (An instructional unit would be a course or a collection of problems with a unifying theme.) A small Davidson logo or simply the name "Davidson College" with a link to the Davidson College Physlet Archive (http://webphysics.davidson.edu/applets/applets.html) serves this purpose. 3) Credit does NOT have to be given on every problem or HTML page that contains a Physlet problem. We encourage authors to make the integration of Physlets into their curriculum material as seamless as possible. 4) Publications which result from using Physlets will reference the Physlet site http://webphysics.davidson.edu/applets/applets.html. Physlets, i.e., the Java applets themselves, are authored by Wolfgang Christian and his students at Davidson College. The term Physlet® is a registered trademark of Wolfgang Christian. ------------------------- SECTION 8. TECHNICAL SUPPORT ------------------------- If you are having problems with the software, call 1-800-677-6337 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. CST, Monday through Friday.
